Remarks

A medial fragment of a black basalt groundstone metate. A very large tool riddled with roots filling the rather large pores, some of which are as large as 1cm in diameter. The two broad, flat surfaces are ground smooth, but only one of the sides surfaces appears to be an original margin of the tool, the others being rough fracture surfaces. The finished side also includes a .5cm-deep groove, which widens from 1-2cm wide as it moves down the edge, parallel to the side. The groove could possibly be used to hold the groundstone in place during use. The tool thickness tapers across the entire fragment, suggesting that the original instrument was possibly curved or slanted in some way.
