It appears as though the exterior design is positioned on a shoulder, but this sherd gives little reference for stancing, so I can't designate it as a shoulder fragment or give a body axis. The exterior is indeed dark grey and polished on one side of the decoration, but it turns light brown across the impressed ornament. The light brown slip is highly visible there in the sherd's fracture edge. SAXS analysis conducted at ANL on 3/16/06. Designated MAE 624.
