Remarks

This sherd likely belongs to a typical classic Kura-Araxes cup with near cylindrical neck. A nicely fired, dense vessel. Core band 2 is only 1mm wide, constituting a short boundary between the interior and exterior pastes. The preserved rim portion of the sherd is too small to estimate vessel diameter. Approximately 20% of the exterior sherd surface is encrusted with light brown corrosion. The original interior surface of the sherd is nearly 80% abraded away. All polishing marks are horizontal and some polish appears to cross over the rim from the exterior to the interior (even though the color changes from black to light brown over the rim transition). SAXS analysis conducted at ANL on 3/16/06. Designated MAE 631.
