SAXS analysis conducted at ANL on 3/16/06... Desginated as MAE 605. True exterior munsell color is 7.5 YR 5/4 brown down to the shoulder and then GLY1 2.5/1 black. True interior munsell is GLY1 2.5/1 black down to the shoulder and then 5YR 5/4 reddish brown. Alternating brown and black colors on both the interior and exterior of this sherd (aroudn the shoulder region) indicate a possible "nested" firing technique where vessels were stacked during firing , leaving a telltale band of black where the pots had contact (creating a reducing atmosphere).
