Remarks

A neck-less r/s fragment from a large LM pithos. The rim is rolled in a very obvious way, so that there's almost a 1cm diameter opening between the rim roll and the vessel wall. A single indentation on the upper shoulder may represent a circumferential linear decoration, but too little is preserved on the sherd for any conclusive analysis. The exterior surface features some light yellowish brown corrosion where it meets the rim and is generally mottled with Gray 10YR 6/1. The superior rim surface also features light yellowish brown corrosion or abrasion markings. There are no rotational striations on any surface--interesting because it suggests a pithos is too large for rotational techniques. In addition to the noted coarse sand particles, significant medium and fine sand are also present in the fabric. Particles of all types are visible perforating all surfaces. A limited amount of pyrite particles are visible in the interior surface. Breaks are rough.
