[n.b. elevations taken from the SE corner of the unit] This locus was characterized by a loose, granular dark brown soil matrix and contained some root activity. We encountered one large granite stone in the SW corner; however, it was found in isolation. The SW part of the unit was considerably darker in color, but this appears to be the product of bio-organics rather than related to any sort of cultural phenomenon. After almost of meter of sterile deposits we opted to close the unit. It is interesting that in this unit (like that of the other western-most units in the test trenches) we did not reach bedrock.
