Remarks

This andiron fragment is likely part of a leg (oriented downwards) or a decorative end (oriented upwards, comparable to a horseshoe form). It is important to note that is fragment is broken on all sides making it incredibly difficult to identify its overall form. It is worth mentioning that given the composition and shape of what remains of the object it could also be part of a hearth, table, or oven. What does remain clear based on the fragment is that that this object -- like many of the other andiron fragments uncovered in T38 -- is triangular in form. It has a narrow end or point (that is somewhat complete), which is 28.27mm wide and gets increasingly wider (51.38mm) at the part that would have joined to the rest of the object. The clay fabric is incredibly coarse and appears to be heavily tempered, based on what is visible at the fractured areas. The object is a dark reddish gray in color, the smoky coloring suggests that it was associated with some sort of firing activities during and/or after its construction.
