This morning I brought the magnetometer out just to confirm that the original anomaly signal was still strong after removing a small 4 inch length of modern wire or fencing, and it was. So we kept digging in locus 1 and finished in late morning. A narrow wall of variably sized cobbles began to emerge from the SE corner of the trench trending NW. I divided the soil on either side of the wall into separate loci, with locus 2 to the north of the wall and locus 3 to the south. We first tackled locus 2, a wash layer, and continued to collect some good LB sherds including a nice jar handle in the SE corner near the wall. There is also some sizeable obsidian flakes from this locus as well. Locus 2 ended after about 20cm when we came down on a prepared clay floor that I'm presuming in LB given the good ceramics right about it. We'll finish sweeping this down and take a photo tomorrow. In the meantime, we brought locus 3 on the other side of the wall down to the same level, and it's not clear that this is will also reveal a floor. After looking at the mag image again, the wall may be part of the large rectangular structure, or it may be part of a smaller circular structure that abuts the larger one on its western side. Not sure this is something we're going to solve this year, but I think we've at least established a good LB context for the trench. Maybe tomorrow we'll find the big anomaly in locus 3 since it's on the south side of the trench...
