2008.07.28. Monday. AM-- continued to remove topsoil with shovels. still working within a single locus-- this is locus 116. loose topsoil, noncontiguous stones, sparse finds. extant loci for T19 are all closed at this point, barring last minute cleaning or exploration. I am also assigning loci to the walls, which will also be closed (these are loci 117- 123). I had hoped to reach the top of the stone collapse today, but so far all the stones reached are too loose-- with the exception perhaps of those at the far east end of the trench. I did a schematic profile drawing to show the relationships at mid- trench-- between the LB walls, loci 107 and 113, and the bedrock. I also finished taking general measurements for the wall loci, including the two loci in the EB sector. That is, locus 122 is defintely a wall , but the single-course circular feature to the north of the trench is still of an elusive ontology. perhaps/hopefully further excavations to the north of this area will clarify what is going on in the EB contexts-- though judging by the curvature of the LB walls and the terrace cut, the EB area in the northern extension of T19 might be much smaller. the relationship of the EB wall with the EB hearth feature (andiron, burnt soil and sherds) is also confusing. it is possible that the same (de)construction event that disturbed the andiron and related objects also possibly collapsed the wall: a second andiron fragment was found near the dispersed wall stones in the bottom of 109. I need to look again at the stratigraphic relationships of the (trenched) wall and the burnt level.
