Narrative

In the morning I cleaned up locus 4 wall stones and locus 5 (possible) prepared clay floor and took a photo. Afterwards, we spent the morning digging in loc 3 on south side of wall to see if we come down on a burn layer that might be responsible for the mag anomaly. There is less material emerging from this side of wall, even when accounting for the smaller area of the locus. Among materials were a few burned bone frags. By the end of the day we started hitting a lighter, softer soil so tomorrow I will measure and start a new locus. The wall is definitely going down to a second course as we go down further. In the northern part of trench, I'm questioning whether we were actually on a floor since the soil remains a dark tan loam and the materials are much bigger than I would expect for a floor surface. I kept the locus 5 designation, but may have to reclassify it as a soil horizon rather than a built feature. In any case still lots of good LB sherds coming out of it, as well as sizeable bone parts. Perhaps we'll hit the real floor just before we get to bedrock, which seems to be where LB floors are typically built in the SLT ops.
