Spent the day working in locus 16 and opened a new locus, locus 17. In locus 16, I was hoping to identify the floor surface. Excavated a probe in the east corner of the trench. It's clear that we're not far from "bedrock" -- or a sterile white/tannish-orange clay interspersed with decomposing rocks. In the baulk and in the section of the probe, I can identify what appears to be an orange clay surface (floor prep?), above which is a thin, dark brown silt layer that I suspect is a floor. Decided to shave off a bit of locus 16 elsewhere in the locus, and then to proceed with troweling, to try and capture the floor surface. But this will take some time. First I need to bring locus 17 down to the level of locus 13 and 15. It's looking increasingly likely that I won't be able to finish the trench completely. Locus 16 is a medium brown clayish silt with occassional orange clay lenses as well as some dark earth splotches. While excavating the probe in the east corner, a few sherds of a single vessel were found on the actual floor surface. I bagged these separately, and this surface will eventually be registered as locus 18.
