Narrative

A very busy and productive final day of the season. We started the day working in locus 28, in the south quadrant of the trench. While the workers were doing that, I troweled around the bottom of locus 21 and identified the floor surface -- a packed silt layer with splotches of burnt earth and yellow/orange clay patches. The floor was labeled locus 20, in keeping with the locus number assigned to it when the floor was first identified in the probe in the east quadrant of the room. Collected two charcoal samples from the floor of locus 20, as well as two macrobot samples. The floor was not identified across the entire trench -- absent in the south quadrant. (See place form for locus 20). Today we also found two column bases. The one in the eastern quardrant was found at the point where the top of the stone was just about even with the top of the floor surface. The one in the southern quadrant is located in the area where the floor is not preserved, so we went through the clay matrix in which the base is embedded. Excavated locus 20 in its entirety; beneath the level of the floor is a sterile orange clay with decomposing black rock interspersed. Took photos of floor (locus 20) as well as the column bases (29 and 30). I also created a new locus (31) for the area of the passageway into room J. This will be excavated on Friday. Adam will take final photos of the trench.
