Narrative

Today's work marked the end of excavation work in operation AB3 and the continued excavations in AB4 below the west trench pavement stones. In AB3 we continued to work in locus 22 at the beginning of the day, removing one additional sealing stone before exposing the entire circumference of the bedrock pit. We then moved to clean the stones filling the westernmost portion of the pit at the western balk--which we had previously hypothesized constituted an intra-pit construction. I'm doubtful about that status now, but we removed an overhanging balk pedestal, left the stones in place, and cleaned them completely. We then removed and cleaned behind several remaining stones near the basalt stone basin, freshly cleaned the northwest corner of the trench behind the locus 4 wall, and excavated more deeply in the northeast corner cleaning that wall portion as well. With the trench finished shortly after lunch, all personel were sent to operation AB4. In AB4 we continued to clean back locus 7 in a westward direction, pulling pedestalled stones and cleaning further. When the trench was sufficiently clean we photographed loci 6 an 7 together and then pulled several of the western trench pavement stones, excavating the underlying locus as locus number 8. That locus may well be another LB pit as the matrix was exteremely ashy like the AB3 destruction layer and we found a small LB pot near trench center. There may in fact be two bedrock pits, one passing under the western trench balk. Tomorrow we will continue to descend here. Several C14 samples from locus 8 today.
