08.14.2008Today Vahe said that the tractor could come in about an hour. So I agreed--it looks a little cooler this morning. I then started people backfilling Burial 9 and preparing Burial 12 for the tractor--clearing off the capstones to be pulled--I decided to pull 4 although I am not entirely sure all 4 need to be, but all of them are on top of ones which seem like capstones. I then quickly went to set u the total station on mapping station 16 and map the rest of the cemetery. i took Arkadi and Arabo with me to learn how to set it up--and I also forgot the arm that attaches the data collector to the stadia rod so I had Arabo position the stadia rod while I took the points on the data collectore. However in a rush i first messed up the operation names so there are now a bunch of noe existant datums that are actually the edge of B06 and the 1998 excavation. Then I messed up the noenclature again on the name of the point so had to do the 1998 burial again. The group of burials are now under Crom3. There were a few random burials that I couldn't get to the NE because they were too low for the mapping station to see and then there are a couple that actually wrap around the hill northwards toward the fortress which we also couldn't shoot in from 16. And of course, someo of them are clearly burials while others... When I returned the tractor was still not there. It showed up about 12, but had some difficulty with the capstones and eventually ran ou of oil. Vahe had ot go get more and they had to work on restarting it. Eventually we got all 4 stones off but it wasn't exactly pretty. Several other rocks had to be taken out because the capstones were sunken lower than the surrounding rocks. We started excavatug locus 4.It looks like a possible cist but I may have taken off more stones than needed...
