Today was the first day of operation WSAC. This is a 5 by 4 meter trench in the eastern corner of the room AC in the area between the citadel and precinct A, for now referred to as part of the West Settlement. AC shares a partition wall with room AD, and WSAC is delimited by the northeast wall and the southeast wall of this room, consisting of large basalt rocks that are visible above ground. The intent is to extend this operation either further into AC or southeast across the partition wall into AD. The datum point for the operation is a large rock to the right of the eastern corner of the trench. After taking preliminary elevation points, workers Gagik, Sevag, Vartan and Ardzrun began removing the sod, which was labeled Locus 1. They finished after lunch, and this locus produced one bag of ceramics, one of bone, and one of obsidian. After this I opened Locus 2, which is the dark soil of overwash directly beneath the sod, roughly 15-20 cm below (see notebook for elevations). This trench is at a substantial slope, so we began Locus 2 in the upper part. The day had been rainy with thunderclouds and we ended about five minutes early as it started pouring.
