First day in the field and a busy and productive day-- though still getting my excavation-legs back under me. Adam and Ruben have me set up expanding a 2008 trench excavated by Elizabeth (T22). This trench extends to the E of the 2008 excavation, which stopped along a large LB(?) wall. In 2008 T22 had EB levels, with LB pits dug into them. Adam expects the excavation this year to have similar results. The slope of the unit is problematic, however, and for now I have relied on keeping two different loci open in the W and E (with the topsoil/cleaning being locus L100, wall cleaning being L101): L102 in the West/upslope and L103 being E/downslope. Aside from ceramics, lithics (obsidian) and bone in all loci, a serrated sickle blade and paste (?) bead were found in L101. Ruben said not to keep a bag of bones for L100 and 101 (topsoil/cleaning layers) since deposits are too mixed. The language barrier doesn’t help with the workers (though isn’t hurting as much as I expected), and keeping a few workers from digging holes is a constant battle-- with “mi pori...hart!” as the battle cry. For the most part, however, the experienced workers understand what they should be doing and how to do it. All together a good start.
