Our work in T22 today focused largely on excavating L102 which is the West/upslope portion of the trench, which abuts with the wall that separates the 2008 T22 and the 2010 T22. We lowered L102 until a change is soil was apparent, with the loosely packed light brown soil giving way to a darker brown (almost black) and clayish, at which point I opened a new locus (104) and will continue excavating this locus tomorrow. The dark soil is most readily apparent in the center of L102, but also appears in the NW corner of the locus, right against the N/S wall that divides T22 2008 and T22 2010. In this NW corner a more granular, orange soil is coming through as well, although this may just be a lense. More leveling of L104 tomorrow should help to discern the extent of this dark layer. It seems likely that this change is soil is the beginning of the destruction layer appearing in the trench, although the lack of significant charcoal deposits in L104 suggests that we’ve only reached the very top of the destruction, if at all. Tomorrow will focus on leveling 104, trying to understand the extent of this darker soil, and also begin to spend more time in L103 which is downslope/to the east of L104. It might be necessary to open another locus further to the E of L103 to best deal with the slope. I’ll decide that on site tomorrow.
