Today we continued removing locus 2, which is the same dark loamy soil as the topsoil and is characterized as overburden, across the entire trench, moving from the NE wall to the SW wall. After this was finished I closed Locus 2, which produced 3 bags of ceramics, a mix of LB and Iron III. I decided to split the operation into two parts, because of the slope and the uneven quality of the removal of locus 2: one 4 by 3 m covering the northern and eastern corners (for elevations see notebook), and the other covering the southern and western corners, 4 by 2 m (for elevations see notebook). The matrix of both of these loci is still the dark loamy soil of locus 2, however locus 4 appears to have more smaller rocks. After splitting the trench and taking elevations we began removing earth from locus 3. Towards the end of the day, I noticed a soil color change in the eastern corner of the operation, which I opened as Locus 5, with measurements and elevations in the notebook (roughly 1.25 by 1.9 m). This has a more medium brown and clay-y matrix than Locus 2 and 3, but there was not enough time to explore it. At the end of the day close to a third of locus 3 had been removed and locus 4 had not been touched.
