In Locus 504, we came down on a long scatter of bones and sherds extending out from the NW corner, as is characterized by a loose, less granular, brown soil in contrast to the loose, granular, yellow soil in the NE corner. The NW corner became Locus 507. In the new locus we found a piece of mineralized wood (Ar/Ge T19.507.MB.01).
In locus 505, we removed 4 large stones which were north of the LBA wall.
In the process of cleaning, one of the workers removed part of a possible feature in Locus 506, though after clearing more of the locus, it doesn’t appear to be much of a feature, but more likely part of a wider ephemeral lens of black soil, as we come down on the yellow/orange soil layer. Similarly, early on it looked like there may have been a third line which joined to two “berms”, but after more cleaning, it became clear that the compact, raised, black feature (“berm”) was different from the ephemeral, loose lenses of black soil that are spread throughout the southern part of the locus. The “berm” itself is 5cm tall. On the western side of the “berm” feature, below it in depth (52 cm), we found a bronze button (Ar/Ge T19.506.M.01). In L506, we found part of a ceramic loom weight (Ar/Ge T19.506.CO.01). There is a small concentration of animal bones (mostly cow), east of the “berm” feature, along the S edge of the locus, 2.5 m east of the datum, including a piece of worked bone (Ar/Ge T19.506.B.01). Roman took a soil sample from inside the corner formed by the “berm feature” (Ar/Ge T19.506.M.01), and another just south of the first sample (Ar/Ge T19.506.MB.02).
