Today I wanted to see more of the extent of Locus 6, the organic rich, mottled, compact matrix that Lori believes might be a floor or underneath one; the goal was to see how far it extended toward the southern corner or the northern corner. We began by cleaning some of the walls, especially on the top where there is still a lot of overgrowth. Then the crew removed most of the rocks from the fallout in the northern area of the trench, which I had drawn the day before. After that I declared Locus 7 as the area of the trench under these rocks and extending down to the SW baulk, since it appears to be the same matrix. We spent the rest of the day exposing the soil, mostly the same darker rick loamy soil of Locus 3 above, with some bleeding of Locus 6 around the NE wall; the western corner is still very much the dark soil of Locus 4 and Locus 2 above. It was somewhat difficult to trace the 'floor' of Locus 6 into the center of the trench, and it is possible that the floor has sloped, and we will come down on it in a few days. Vartan broke his shovel and went to town to fix it, so that Baris was his replacement; he and the rest of the crew removed the two large rocks in the southern corner (see sketch from 7/4/10). I declared Locus 8 the area behind these rocks in the southern corner, as it is somewhat removed from the rest of the trench from the wheelbarrow ramp and the removed rocks, and is the dark loamy matrix of Locus 7. Today I also did a sketch of the gap in the NE wall near the join to the SE wall, which still appears odd. A ceramic disk (Ar/Ts.WSAC.06.CO.02) was found today as well as part of what might be a polishing stone (Ar/Ts.WSAC.07.L.01). Also received elevation points for trench from Ian. At the end of the day the rock fall seemed more interesting as there are now three or four large stones leading from the NE wall to the NW baulk, and it seems possible to me now the rockfall might be from some feature there, instead of the NE wall, which had seemed odd, as it was collected mostly in that northern area and not across the trench.
