Narrative

The day started with the opening of two new loci on the tops of the walls--locus 09 on the top of the southwest wall and locus 10 on the top of the northeast wall. In both loci, workers removed sod and just enough of the dark to medium brown matrix beneath in order to expose the entirety of the top course of stones for drawing. In addition to this, I troweled out locus 06 to try and trace the medium brown deposit that was appearing in the western corner of the locus. It appears that the medium brown matrix is prevalent across the southwest side, that is just along the southwest wall, but further toward the interior of the room, the dark brown silt continues. I thus closed locus 06 and created a new locus, 11, to designate the continuing dark brown matrix in the northeastern half of what was locus 06. Here we continue to look for traces of the floor (locus 07). It is somewhat bewildering that the medium brown deposit has not been encountered yet in the middle of the room. The floor must be dramatically slanted. After taking locus 11 down about 10-15 cm, we encountered several rather large stones that prohibit further work. Tomorrow we will close locus 11 and remove these stones. Hopefully the floor is beneath them. It is notable that in the "section" (the unexcavated northern quadrant of the trench, we can see traces of the slanting floor (or otherwise floorlike deposit) in the eastern part, but it drops off. Will see if it continues deeper down in the section. Three interesting finds today: a worked antler in locus 10 (show Belinda), a retouched blade in locus 11, and most interestingly, additional fragments of the red vessel with zoomorphic relief.
