Narrative

Gor, Vartan, and I completed 1E', 3E', and half of 3D', because we got rained out.

There's an interesting pit in the non-rocky depression between the two main rocky knolls, near 3D' @ 2ºha (50m , 80m), similar to the one near 1E @ 1ºha (95m , 5m). These circular pits are about 5m in diameter, and are populated by vegetation that seem to favor colonization of disturbed soil—or, soil that is composed of many layers of topsoil, or have just grown in relative abundance to surrounding, non-pit vegetation due to water pooling up in the pit. Any of these factors I guess, really. Either way, I've noticed the same phenomenon in year(s)-old backfill. So, I'm basically thinking that either water pools up in these pits, favoring plant growth, or plants favoring disturbed soil are present in said pits. I will collect some plant samples and ask Roman which species have which favored soil characteristics (wet vs. disturbed), and perhaps draw some courses of action from there. Favoring of wet soils suggests the abundance of plants in the pits are caused by geologic and climatologic events, and favoring of disturbed soil suggests the pits are human-made.
