Today we were able to start screening as the soil had dried overnight, so three workers (Gagik, Narek and Vaghan) were able to remove a lot of Locus 11 in WSAC. At the same time, three workers (Sevag, Baris and Ardzrun) continued removing Locus 6 in WSAD, the continuing remnants of the darker soil from the overburden/wash. A ceramic disk was found in the morning while troweling the surface of WSAC. Part of the day was spent cleaning the walls in these rooms, as the removal of dirt left the orientation of stones unclear. The partition wall between WSAC and WSAD appears to taper out as it moves down the slope, growing slightly wider. Locus 7 in WSAD was also removed, which was a pocket of lighter brown soil that appears to hug the partition wall, probably due to leaching from the stones. After removing three other larger rocks and sweeping down the surface, it began to rain and we took a short break, after which I took pictures and measurements of WSAD to try and see the soil color changes. There is still an area of much darker soil along the SE baulk of WSAD, likely the same occurrence as seen in WSAC, where the middle of the room has sunk down and more overburden has collected. At the end of the day I declared WSAD.08, a locus of the darker soil that remains delimited by several larger stones in the blocked doorway in the western corner of WSAD. Two of these stones were removed and some of the dirt before another rainstorm hit and we ended the day an hour early. There is still much to remove in Locus 11 in WSAC, after which I plan to close that locus and open a newer one as more and more bits of charcoal are appearing as well as an increase in the density of diagnostic artifacts. However at this point the soil matrix has not changed and remains the hardpacked, organic rich, medium brown-light brown composition.
We also had a visit from Ruben and Adam, and Ruben noted that the tops of the walls in WSAD and WSAC (ie the NE baulk) needs to be cleaned at least a meter back in order for Hasmik to draw the walls.
