Another busy day in T27. We were hoping to remove some of the exposed ceramics today, but decided not to rush it and to clean, photograph and draw tomorrow, and begin removing on Friday. We spent most of the day cleaning the locus, and uncovering even more ceramics. Particularly interesting was a pile of organic material (including what looked like wood pulp, charcoal, sod(?) and charred wooden beams) which was in the SW corner of the trench. I made this L11 since various wood samples which may be good for dendrochronology or wiggle-matching came from this pile. In addition, the removal of the debris exposed another group of ceramics, some of which are intact (the smaller ones). I have emailed photos to Sturt Manning to see whether these will be good samples for dendro, and have wrapped the most promising with string to keep safe. Some samples actually had bark attached. All in all, we seem to have 26 whole ceramics, 5 or 6 of which are reasonably intact. In this sample organic debris pile (L11) we found two objects: a bronze arrowhead (Ar/Ge.T27.11.M.01) and a large bone awl (Ar/Ge.T27.11.B.01). Both are fantastic finds.
Ruben also bought two large plastic sheets today, and we used these to cover the ceramics at the end of the day in case of rain.
