The trenches were wet today due to heavy rains yesterday. Had to scoop out water from a puddle today. Spent most of the day continuing in locus 17. Removed several fallen stones. In the process of excavating locus 17, encountered two interesting features--a roundish stone with a slight depression in the center that appears to be a column base, and a trapezoidal, flat stone with a clay/plaster coating whose function is uncertain. Another such large, semi-rectilinear stone was found in locus 15. Will create feature loci for these once the situation is more clear. The bottom of locus 17, if not even part of it, appears to be the floor. Two charcoal samples collected from this locus today, the latter being larger and of better quality. One possibility that I entertained today is that there may be three occupation levels in WSN. The uppermost floor, in this reconstruction, is locus 07, with associated stone "feature." The middle floor would be that marked by the bottom of locus 15--with the semi-rectilinear, plaster coated stone. The lowest would be the level with the possible column base, i.e. the bottom of locus 17. Opened a new locus today--18--in the western quadrant of the trench, beneath locus 12 ans 15. The southwest wall continues to go down with yet another course, which is emerging in locus 18. Charcoal sample collected from this locus as well today.
