Narrative

Busy day in T27. After measuring out L60, 56, and 57 on Saturday, I had the crew take a first pass across L56 and L57 (we’ll leave L60 alone for now since I’m not sure exactly how it relates to the rest of the layers in the trench). We also cleaned and began to dismantle a series of smaller stones in L06 (which Ruben, rightly I think, no longer thinks is a wall). After the cleaning and first pass in L56, I am even more suspicious that there are pits beneath it. In some cases (especially in the NW corner of L56) bedrock is beginning to be visible, however, towards the center of L56 the bedrock gives way to soil, and pit contours are beginning to become visible. We were only able to clean this today, since rain cut the day short, but we will begin to excavate at least two of these pits (which are visible) tomorrow. In L57, we have taken a 10 cm pass and it is still unclear as to how it relates to the rest of the area. We’ll take another pass tomorrow and hopefully clear this up.
Today was a day rich in artifacts as we found an obsidian point (Ar/Ge.T27.06.L.02) during the cleaning of L06, some azurite and ochre along the western edge of L56, four stone tools/polishing stones from L56 (Ar/Ge.T27.56.01; Ar/Ge.T27.56.02, Ar/Ge.T27.56.03, Ar/Ge.T27.56.04), a bronze arrowhead (Ar/Ge.T27.56.M.01), and the bottom of an interesting ceramic (perhaps a flask of some sort?) in L56. Also took a C14 sample from L56.
