Narrative

Today we worked in both WSI2 and WSN in the hopes of finishing at least the former trench before the end of the season. In WSI2 we spent the whole day in locus 14, the southwestern half of the trench. We excavated the rocky elevated area just to the southeast of the temporary internal "baulk" and then extended the locus further to the northwest. The matrix continues to be a dark brown silt, in all likelihood a deep wash deposit. Still no trace of the lighter brown matrix of locus 11 in this area. In addition, we concentrated our efforts on cleaning the area of locus 14 that is adjacent to the southeast wall in order to prepare it for Hasmik. In the course of doing so, we collected one small sample of burnt bone for radiocarbon analysis--not a particularly impressive sample.

In WSN, the day was spent working on locus 07. I noted an unusual presence of LBA materials in this locus so far, which doesn't really make sense since the deeper floor below locus 17 and 18 appears to be Iron 3. Will see if this picture changes once we finish the locus. Interesting small finds from locus 07 include a ground stone and an obsidian flake. Also, a saved a large chunk of what looks like a part of a hearth (a crumbly, ceramic material), which was recovered from the area demarcated by the stone "feature". (We now know that the stones of this feature are resting on dirt and not another course of stones. Will photograph tomorrow, draw, and then likely remove after showing to Hasmik.) Have collected other pieces of this material this season. Will see in the end if they join and amount to anything.
