Narrative

Started crew of 4 today removing the second half of Locus 22, in the E-S parts of operation WSAC, to try and catch a floor and finish this trench so that Hazmik can draw the walls. In the course of excavating, we came down upon a stone feature in the eastern corner, abutting both the NE and SE walls, which I declared as Feature 26. The feature consists of a line of stones, about 12, which appear to be laid flat, and run from the NE/SE corner along the SE wall where they join the wall right at the doorway, further indicating that it is indeed a doorway. The darker matrix delimited by these stones and the SE wall, roughly half a meter wide, I declared as Locus 27 and took two bags of soil for analysis. I also managed to get one small piece of charcoal from this locus. The matrix which is darker from Locus 22 produced almost no artifacts, but did have a couple clumps of baked clay.
The removal of more of Locus 22 produced a lot more charcoal, three pieces of which were taken as charcoal samples for analysis. The matrix is also still producing quite a lot of ceramic and faunal material, and at the end of the day after doing some troweling, the color is becoming more splotchy, with patches of orange and grayish white. In the southern corner of the operation there are still a lot of small stones, and the dust was making it hard to see their arrangement- it is conceivable that it is all still tumble from the blockage of the door, but they are embedded quite deep into Locus 22.
In the area of the doorway, I had the guys clean and finish removing Locus 25, the tan/medium brown matrix between the SE wall of WSAC and the three large stones in the middle of the doorway. The matrix had somewhat changed to a more yellowish/white brown, and there appears to be a large black scoria-type rock in the middle of the locus.
I didn't have the guys touch WSAD today although Gagik, Sevag and Ardzrun stayed after work and broke the two very large rocks sitting in the western corner of the operation, so that tomorrow we should be able to start removing the rest of Locus 21.
