Narrative

Finally came down on a certified floor in WSAC today, a nice paved stone floor extending from Feature 26 in the eastern corner towards the NW. Today, in the morning, I wanted to see if there was another course of stones in Feature 26, and to try and understand the jumble of rocks in the southern corner of the trench. I decided to open up a 10 cm pass in Locus 28 along the feature, and the guys almost immediately came upon a formation of flat stones, laid in a relatively flat arrangement, with a tannish-orangish soil between them, and bits of charcoal. We spent the rest of the day removing Locus 28, and got about halfway through the trench. In the course of excavating this locus, the stones of the paved floor slope considerably to the west, towards the center of room WSAC. They also appear to run beneath the jumble of rocks in the southern floor. I took three soil samples from this area of Locus 28, but two of them, which I thought were only about 10 cm above this stone floor, actually are about 40 cm above. I also took 4 charcoal samples, two from the matrix above the floor, and two from right on top of the stones.
We didn't touch WSAD today, except for in the morning, when I had two of the younger guys cleaning up the mess from rockbreaking yesterday afternoon in the western corner of the trench, in front of the doorway. They came down on a patch of dark, organic soil with a huge piece of charcoal in it, which I took and gave to Locus 21, even though Locus 21 hasn't been excavated in this area. I still need to trowel in this area, after the rock removal, to see if it is the same tan/clay matrix as 21, or something different.
