Efforts today focused almost entirely in operation WSI2. After tracing out the floor across almost all of locus 17, I closed this locus and created two new ones to designate the floor itself, locus 22 and locus 23 (see place entries for details on each). New loci also created for the emerging stone built features in the trench (see place entries for loci 24 and 25). Much of the day was spent determining whether more of the feature of locus 20 remained to be exposed and troweling the areas around it. In the course of so doing, we seem to have better exposed the pieces of the feature (20) that are collapsed inward toward the eastern end. Have also begun to identify, in front of the feature, more of the exceedingly packed, possibly burnt, orange clay that is also prevalent behind it. The situation is somewhat unclear: on the one hand, it seems almost certain that the bottom of locus 17--i.e., the new locus 22, is a floor surface, judging by the matrix and its consistency (many, many small specks of charcoal, incidentally, three of which were collected today). At the same time, the emerging locus 25--the line of stones--is only partially visible at this level, suggesting that either it belongs to a deeper floor, or we are not yet on the floor. Hasmik hasn't yet drawn locus 20 in its context because she wants to see more of the various stone features exposed--locus 24 and 25. But to do so entails excavating through a probable floor surface (collected 4 MB samples today from loci 22 and 23). Another stone feature, not yet designated a locus number, has emerged in the north corner of the trench. Will explore this area further tomorrow.
