Today we continued clearing the overburden from the east side of the trench, moving deeper and extending west slightly. There are a large number of rocks in the overburden, but material densities are low. Towards the end of the day, we found a large piece of charcoal (Ar/Ge.T31.2.C14.01, approx. 3 cm x 2 cm) along the northern wall (152 cm below datum 1 and 140 cm west of the NE corner). Another large piece of charcoal (Ar/Ge.T31.2.C14.02) was turned up by a shovel in the SE corner (at an approx. depth of 160 cm below datum 1). As more charcoal and a burnt bone were found near the eastern wall of the trench, I decided to open a new locus (Locus 3).
