Today started with the continuing removal of Locus 5 in WSAC2, the dark loam of the central part of the trench. The workers finished this right before lunch, and I then had them clean and trowel the wall face, the western and southern corners, and near the wheelbarrow ramp, where there are some jumbles of rocks. I then declared three new loci, because soil changes are now more apparent.
Locus 6 constitutes a lighter, more rocky matrix in the northern corner and extending toward the partition wall. Locus 7 is the appearance of the hardpacked clay-y tannish/brown cultural fill seen in WSAC and WSAD from 2010 and which might mark a first living surface. This locus extends about a meter to the NW along the partition wall's face. Locus 8 constitutes the remaining very dark, blackish loose loam of the overburden mostly in the western corner and extending about 5.5 meters to the NE; its NE edge abuts Locus 6.
We started by having 4 workers remove Locus 6, which turned out to be more of a mixture of brown and black loose soil. At the same time, myself and Driver Artur and Gagik worked on removing a jumble of smallish rocks in the southern area of Locus 7, against the partition wall. When these were removed an articulated fragment of 4 or 5 large sherds of a cooking vessel appeared relatively flat against the tannish clay matrix, along with more sherds, bones and organic splotches and small pieces of charcoal. Its possible this is a much later living surface, potentially a later floor, since the paved floor of WSAC is much lower in elevation. I did not mark this area its own locus as the soil is the same as that along the wall to the NE. A possible piece of worked obsidian was also found near these sherds.
At the end of the day a lot of Locus 6 had not been picked up and needs to be shoveled tomorrow.
