The soil in the trench this morning was damp at the top from the rain last night. This morning we are working on finishing bringing down Locus 4 to the same level across the locus. Near the NW corner, there is another patch of tan clay, which is not contiguous with the area of light tan clay in the NE corner, at a depth of 2284.67 masl. Also in this area are pieces of extremely friable granite, which may be a result of rocks being burnt. In between the two areas of tan clay there is an area of black staining. In the lens of tan clay in the NW corner, we uncovered another part of a beam (Locus 9). The depth at the top of the beam is 2284.70 masl and the bottom thus far is 2284.64 masl. The section of the beam uncovered thus far is 35 cm x 15 cm.
After level off the locus, it was clear that we were still in the same medium brown soil as before, so I decided to take the level down further, while leaving the area of light tan clay at 2284.74 masl in the NE corner and 2284.67 masl. After an initial pass of 5 cm in the eastern part of the trench, which revealed more of the medium brown matrix, I decided to do another 5 cm. While coming down, we pulled most of large rocks from the eastern part of the locus. Near the middle of the eastern wall of the trench, we found a tiny ceramic cup (Ar/Ge.T31.4.CO.02) at 2284.61 masl. Just below the beam that is Locus 7, there is some more charcoal which is lying on the clay surface, though it is not entirely clear how it relates to the rest of the burnt beam. We also discovered some sort of burrow just next to the middle of the eastern wall of the trench. After coming down, we discovered there is more of the light tan layer of clay along the eastern wall, but it is about 10 cm deeper than the part in the NE corner. Here there is charcoal coming out in the light clay layer, in between the higher and lower levels.
