In SLT 14, we're finishing leveling off the locus 3 wash layer down to the locus 5 clay layer. In the NE corner of SLT 14, I noticed a line of large stones may articulate with the room wall in SLT 13. So I'm establishing locus 7 as the soil in this NE corner enclosed by the possible wall. I had a couple of the guys starting digging down in that corner and the color and texture of the soil matches the rich dark soil in SLT13, so they may in fact be part of the same room. Not a lot of room to dig here, but we'll continue to focus on this corner once the operation is leveled off.
In SLT 14, I'm focusing the digging on the southern most meter of the operation to see how far we have before hitting a floor. In the late afternoon, we came down on what turned out to be a top of large stone basin about 1.5m across. The basin is located against the south baulk and just inside the locus 4 stone wall. I left the soil inside the basin until I can ask Roman how best to sample it for botanical remains. The basin was located soil level 2.63m below datum, while the remainder of the trench we left at 2.08m below datum.
