Narrative

'Quest for the floor' day in WSAC2. For the first hour of the day had guys try and level NE sector of trench with jumble of rocks, then had them clean the whole trench and took photographs and declared new locus, 23, for cultural fill. Lots more charcoal, more mottled nature of matrix, and I believed we were right above a floor, but wasn't sure if it would be clay or paved. I had the workers take four soil samples (a-d) for Roman from this locus. I kept Locus 21 as the dark soil in the western corner and along the NW baulk, because the matrix had not really changed. While digging out the soil samples, stones started appearing about ten cm down, which I guessed were part of a paved floor in a similar layout to the one in WSAC 2010, along the 'trough'. I had the guys start a pass through Locus 23 and screen it while I went and did some GPR for Jeff to look at.
GPR- did ten lines walking north to east (grid 001), then ten lines east to south (grid 002), and walked over some stones to see signals. We had some issues in the beginning with the battery but ended up getting it to work.
When I got back to WSAC2, some rocks of a paved floor were showing(!), so I had Vartan and Ardzrun start cleaning these off. They found two okay sized pieces of charcoal but I would still like one from closer to the paved stones. There are still a lot of rocks near the NE edge of the trench, which might be doorway fallout. The large stone in the center of the trench that I had originally thought was a base has turned out to be much higher than the stones of the paved floor, so its function needs to be interpreted differently. At the end of the day we had some rain which did not stop work but made screening difficult, so we did not see the extent of the flagstones to the baulks or to the doorway in the SW wall.
