We took a dendro sample from Locus 14 (which has two parts, A & B). Locus 16 is located on two slightly dressed stones that in are in line with each other. This is promising as it may indicate that this locus is a beam which fell directly on top of an architectural feature. I took a radiocarbon sample (Ar/Ge.T31.18.C14.01), which appears to be either a board or possible a portion of a large beam, though the absence of dark colored soil in the middle of the ring of charcoal makes that seem less likely. We finished taking down Locus 17 and started a step in the trench to west and down slope of Locus 17. This is Locus 19. The soil in Locus 19 is a medium brown silt loam. Some of the ceramic sherds coming out of the locus are quite large in comparison with earlier loci, and Adam indicated that in general the sherds are EB. In the SW corner of Locus 19, we hit a lens of medium tan matrix, which is fairly compact and has larger and more frequent gravel inclusions than the previous matrix. We will see if it extends out tomorrow.
