Narrative

We continued with rock-breaking mid-trench today as well as digging in the NW side. Locus 14 was closed; locus 15 was opened and closed. Both loci were in the NW. When they were finished, it was clear that there was a feature against the NW wall (as was known from LK's WSM in 2005), and I opened locus 16 to explore it. I found that the feature went down quite a ways (against consistent with LK's findings), so I stopped the workers after one course and kept the locus open in order to explore the rest of the area before going down further. Immediately to the SW of locus 16 I opened locus 17, which is another feature locus since it revealed the flagstone floor. The matrix was an aerated dark brown silt. The flagstone floor extends about 4 meters from the NE baulk, and so coincided nicely with the SW edge of the locus. We ended the day troweling and cleaning the floor.

The workers breaking rocks in loci 10 and 13 made good progress, and should be done in another day or so.
