A great deal of rain last night rendered about half of the trench (the NE side, where locus 10 had been open) unworkable for most of the day. We concentrated on digging in other side of the trench (locus 13). Some decent progress was made, considering the weather: we closed 13, dug three loci (19, 20, 21) along the SW wall, plotted a new locus (22) for tomorrow, and by the end of the day with locus 10 having dried out we closed that one as well. Loci 19-21 were all dug about 20cm; at first it appeared we were hitting a paved floor in 19, but it turned out that we were still well above a floor or bedrock in all three. Some nice sherds emerged out of 19 especially, one of which LK said was like to the ceramics in the oven in WSI.
All the rain made me wonder if these rooms incorporated drainage plans of any sort in their original construction. Since they were embedded in the ground they must have frequently gotten wet, even if they were roofed. No guesses can really be made based on what has been dug so far, but perhaps it is worth keeping in mind as the floor continues to emerge.
