I was not in the field yesterday, but Sahak and company broke a few rocks in locus 23, which meant that we were able to dig there a bit today. There were still several large rocks lodged in the soil, but I rolled many of these out of the trench, and by the day the level of the locus had been lowered appreciably.
I closed out locus 27, leaving an interesting stratigraphic pattern unexplored: in the W corner of the locus, a layer of red clay clearly sat on top of a layer of black clay. This suggested a second floor prep and floor in a second occupation phase. The pattern, however, was not visible for more than 20cm of scarp, so it may be a random deposit. Locus 27 reached the sterile clay in one area, but this was not true for the entire locus, and it may be necessary to dig further there.
Locus 28 revealed that the flagstone floor exposed in locus 17 does not extend very far to the SE. 28 is not yet closed, but we have dug below the level of the floor in 17, and it is not present in 28. There is, on the other hand, an alignment of rocks in 28 that, while floating, appears to be a feature of some sort, and we have uncovered what may be a step onto the floor in 17. We'll investigate these features further tomorrow.
