Narrative

After clearing away the dirt from locus 30 this morning, our main task was the removal of the wheelbarrow ramp in the NW end of the trench. It was divided into two loci, the lower of which is being entered as a feature locus, as stratum 3, and which was screened. After this lower locus (32) was cleared away, a continuation of the flagstone floor was revealed. It proceeds as far as the feature in locus 29. Concentrations of materials from the floor in this area were still relatively low.

Since we'd lost our wheelbarrow ramp in the NW, part of locus 23 was taken down to allow access for wheelbarrows through the other end of the trench. Rockbreaking continued in locus 23 for the entirety of today. The locus is now clear of rocks, and it should be possible to dig the rest of the area down to the floor. There is still the area adjacent to it (see notebook for drawing), and at this point in the season it seems necessary to concede that I may not be able to finish the entire trench. The priority will be to finish the 9.33m in the NW, all of which is now at floor level but needs to be cleaned. We'll have to see how much we can get done additionally in the area of locus 23.
