Today my crew completed sod removal of ET4. Excavation was started at the northern corner. Operations would be much facilitated by an additional shovel crew. Two potsherds were found, both of pink-orange fabric, exterior, and interior. An obsidian sherd was also found, as was a small piece of bone. Today's operations also revealed a line of stones, most of which are not visible from the surface. The line of stones is probably the northern section of the small rectangular feature in the 2008 magnetometry figure that ET4 was planned from.
Tomorrow we will extend the southeast baulk by 3 m. ET4 was initially placed too northwesterly—as a result, the unit includes a 3 m overshoot beyond the interior of the small rectangular feature. This rectified by the 3 m southeasterly extension. Because of time constraints, operations at ET4 this season will be relegated to the interior of the small rectangular feature.
In locus 1 of ET4, my crew found a stone artifact with 6-faces forming an imperfect, flat rhomboid. All corners and faces are smoothed. It was found 0.15 m below datum, 2.35 m from the west-baulk, and abutting the south-baulk. A small portion of one of the corners was above sod and is colonized by lichen; the rest was subterranean. The two opposing large faces are 27 cm in length and 22 cm in width. The height of the artifact, formed by the 4 small faces, is 7 cm. It was found lying with large faces parallel to the ground. The large face that was facing downward has several dark gray splotches, with lighter gray splotches inside, tracing the outline of the larger splotches. The upward-facing side seems sun-bleached, and is dark pinkish-brown. The downward-facing side is a darker gray-brown.
