Note: This day is the first entry in the second notebook I kept this season. The first one was filled up as of yesterday.
Since we took photos of the locus 35 area (most importantly features 17 and 29) yesterday, today we dug the floor in that area. Two loci, 36 and 37, were dug, one on each side of the feature in locus 29. Locus 36 is still mostly a red clay matrix, whereas 37, being on the NE side of the trench and not the SW, is an aerated dark brown silt. This is consistent with what I saw at higher elevations throughout this season. Locus 37 has a relatively high volume of materials (including several flakes of red obsidian), though not remarkably more. Both loci are appreciably deep -- after one pass with shovels (perhaps 20cm) it is not yet apparent that we are hitting the sterile clay.
In the other end of the trench we closed 33, and are coming close to closing 34. I took top elevations for locus 38 (between 33 and 34). Digging 38 should level the SE 5.67m out, and I don't think there will be time to dig much more there before the season ends. There is still quite a bit of dirt in the other end that needs to be screened, and this must be given priority. We also need to dig the tops of the walls, which will also take time.
