This was the first day of our last week on site meaning we've got a lot to do still and not much time to do it in. We again spent most of our time working in T34 removing still more wash from the trench and not coming down on any bedrock in particular. This is a bit confusing considering that in T33 the bedrock comes up fairly quickly, but for the time being all we can do is excavate as quickly and carefully as possible. We're still using shovels because the wash seems to be relatively deep, and I'll plan on creating a new locus tomorrow simply because we've covered quite a bit of depth in the past few days.
I discussed the soft soil/pit in T32 (just to the S of the N edge of T32/T27) with Adam and he suggested opening it as a new locus (it is L49 in T32) and excavating as much of it as possible without destroying the clay platform that it seems to extend underneath. After excavating it, there isn't much to it, although it is clearly a pit dug into the bedrock. This raises questions about the phasing of the room and the construction of the clay platform. To help with this I took a charcoal sample from the section of the clay platform that has already been cut into (this is Ar/Ge.T32.54) which should help to both provide a terminus post quem for the construction of the clay platform and also a help calibrate the dendro and other C14 dates.
