I stayed at Tsaghkahovit until 7pm today to excavate, photograph, and collect the human remains from a burial encountered unexpectedly in the course of working in locus 92. The bones of the skeleton were not articulated, but strewn alongside the northwest area of a pit (what became locus 93) in an area to the west of the center of the room. The skeleton is not complete--the skull and lower part of the body appear to be missing (many ribs collected). The area within the pit immediately to the north of the largest concentration of bones was dense with an ash and burnt clay matrix from which I collected charcoal samples, one quite large. A few of the bones showed some evidence of burning. Also found in the pit was a large pumice stone, the same kind retrieved from locus 42. In general, there are many stones in the pit, though these unlikely belonged to any kind of burial chamber given that the burial is already within a pit. Other developments in room N today included the discovery of an unusual ashy sun-baked clay-like material alongside the flagstone floor and a stone tool. In WSM3, we continued to work in locus 6, coming down on massive bedrock boulders.
