Narrative

Last day in the field. We cleaned the trench in the morning. The flagstone floor was swept down, residual mud was scraped away, and some of the scarps neatened. I took final photos shortly before lunch, and then drew the NE baulk in the afternoon. It took me a couple of hours -- there weren't many rocks to draw, but I had to consult with LK regarding the floor levels evident in the baulk. The first layer was a dark brown wash, the second a more aerated silt, the third a dark brown / black burn layer, and the fourth a reddish sterile clay. The third layer was quite thin -- only a few centimeters in some places -- and was not visible throughout the section. The association of this layer with various occupation phases is a subject I'll have to think about, and it will be discussed in my trench report.

LK is going into the field tomorrow, and the trench will be partially backfilled over the next couple of days. The walls will shored up with rubble, and the front (NW) 9.33m of the trench will be tarped.
