July 1, 2013
We started the day by finishing removal of the dirt from Locus 2 and locus 3. I have four worker to start. The weather was slightly windy in the morning. The wind died down and the heat took over toward lunch and into the rest of the afternoon. It was much sunnier today than in previous days. Today, I hoped to finish dirt cleaning from Locus 2 (which we did finish), finish trowel work on locus 3 (not finished), clean rocks on Locus 2 (finished), Open locus 4 (done), close Locus 2 (done), measure and map trench (not started), and remove boulder from Locus 2 (finished). I still have a lot of dirt to remove from Locus 4. I expect Locus 3 to finish tomorrow. I took measurements along the interior wall of Locus 4, so Locus 4 mirrors Locus 2 and contains the inside of the room. I plan to make the walls each a locus when I get further down. I now do not think datum 1 will be good for much longer. At the end of Locus 2 I noticed 2 different soils. One on the upslope of Locus 2 on the NE wall, was lighter and contained more gravel. The soil on the SW wall was darker and looser. Locus 5 will level the slope along locus 2 and 4 (I think?). I had the workers stop digging up dirt in locus 4 to manage time, as it was after lunch and I do not want loose dirt left over night. So far for the whole trench, I opened and closed locus 1 and 2. I opened locus 3 and it is still open. I opened locus 4 and it is still open.
After lunch, three workers were able to move the big boulder without the sledge hammer. Im still hoping to expose the boulder between locus 2 and 4. If it is floating, I will know when we get further down and can remove it. For the rest of the afternoon, the workers removed dirt from locus 4 and Ara continued clearing locus 3 with a trowel. He is trying to make locus 3 level to the wall.
