Today, we changed direction a little bit, and Lori is going to work on extensions to WSDB, as many as she can do given the amount of time she has. Adam and I laid out the first extension, to the NW of the current trench, extending by 1 meter.
For me, then, we created WSDE, to the south of WSDA1, and made it 5.5 m x 3 m in size. The considerations that we (Adam, Lori, and I) took into account were that we wanted an interior space, if possible, but we also wanted to try to discern what the passage in WSDB is going to be. So we chose a relatively (for Tsaghkahovit) small trench to the south of WSDA1, in the thinking that it might be an interior space, but we left a 1 m baulk between the two trenches, so that we wouldn’t necessarily have to dig on the double wall, but we could try to expose its face – assuming that it is, in fact, a wall. It is remotely possible that WSDA1 has an interior wall along the SE baulk, with a retaining wall making the double row. However, it seems like the double wall configurations where the 2nd wall is actually a retaining wall (i.e. not facing another adjoining room) seem to tend to be upslope, which in this case would be to the NE, not the SE.
So in all, WSDE is designed to see what is on the other side of the double wall at the SE of WSDA1, and to try to capture an interior space. Today, we managed to remove the topsoil from 60-70% of the trench, and also outlined the extension to WSDB. These projects were only begun after lunch. Before lunch, the workers were divided between WSDA1 and WSDA2.
