Narrative

7/5/2013
Today we began by scraping former loci 12, 13, and 14 (the cleaning locus is 17), in order to determine the boundaries and elevations of the loci and soil changes. Then new loci will be established.
My workers today were: Nareg (for Sahag), Gago, Davit (for Boris) and Gor. However, I traded Gor for Nareg with Elizabeth and we also gained Melgon.

After cleaning locus 17, which extends from the tumble in the NW of the trench to the SE wall, the lighter soil was visible across the trench, where loci 12 and 13 were, but the area of loc. 14 still looked darker. The new locus for this area is 18, which the team will take down 5-10 cm to start.

Locus 18 top elevations (datum 1):
N: -115.5 cm
E: -108.5 cm
C: -121.6 cm
S: -121.0 cm
W: -116.0 cm

Locus 19 top elevations
N: -108.5 cm (datum 1)
E: -151.3 cm (datum 2)
C: -149.4 cm (datum 2)
S: -160.5 cm (datum 2)
W: -108.5 cm (datum 1)

If 10 cm still does not reveal the lighter soil, we will level the remainder of the room (loc. 19), to see if the soil color persists--to be sure this isn\\\'t an effect of the last couple of days of rain.

Three small finds were found in the N corner of locus 18. The second find was next to the 1st, and the first was an approximate location, so I did not record separate elevation or provenience information.

Small find WSDA1.18.L.1:
Elevation: -110.2 cm (datum 1)
from 297 to 316 cm (from the NW wall)
from 50 to 72 cm (from the NE wall)

WSDA1.18.L.2
Elevation: -110.2 cm (datum 1)
Location: 295 cm from NW wall x 60 cm from NE wall

WSDA1.18.L.3
Top elevation: -120.0 cm (datum 1)
Bottom elevation: -128.6 cm
276.5 cm at SW point from NW wall
from 60 to 70 cm from NE wall

Roman began to scrape locus 19, to level it. We also removed a rock which may have covered a pit. I put Davit working on locus 7, to begin preparation for the photo of the entire room.
We closed loci 18 and 19, making locus 20 the NW half of the trench, where the black soil persists. We will scrape with flat shovels and trowels until we reach the light soil throughout the trench. In the SW side of loc. 20, near the SW wall, there was a thin stripe of clay.

I took a picture of the 3rd small find and also a picture of the tumble profile. I will take another picture of the tumble, once we have removed more stones.

Locus 6 is a problem. It is now clearly horizontally part of the same area as loc. 10, but vertically it is still just below topsoil. So I put Nareg at work there. By the end of the day, it was leveled at about 10 cm down (need elevations).

There is a possible column base in the E half of loc. 20.
