July 10, 2013
Today is Wednesday. The day was very hot but it did sprinkle a little during lunch. I started by closing loci 18 and 19 and opening locus 20. I created locus 20 to level the NE part of the trench with the flagstone floor found in locus 19. Locus 20 is located \"in front of\" locus 19 (to the north). I found charcoal in this locus and I feel this is a good indication beside the flagstone floor found in locus 19 that this floor. I screened this locus for material. This locus will take the whole trench to level and is about 3 wall courses down. 1 worker dug (ruben) while another filled (artur), one too the wheel barrow (grago) and one person screened (Setrak). Roman broke a few rocks along the balk of the trench. I gave Setrak a bag to put material in from the screening. we went through two bags for locus 20. The soil in locus 20 was light brown silt. It is rocky. I switched to using two wheelbarrows shortly before lunch to take up the excess labor. I feel Malgron is perhaps to frail to do wheel barrowing so his wheelbarrow was less full than grago\'s. As we continued in the locus I see more of the flagstone floor (I think) like in locus 19. We found large pieces of pottery in locus 20. Lori showed me how to properly excavate some of the pieces still in situ. I put a bag and dirt over it at Lori\'s direction. I left the rest of that locus alone. The vessel may be a storage vessel, but Lori noted the walls may be too thin for the vessel to be used for storage.Locus 19 and 20 are stratum 3. I noted packed yellow earth in locus 20. Along the SE wall, about 2 courses down, I found a lot of shells. After point proveniencing them and measuring them, I created a new locus for the shells, Locus 22. Apparently, however, they occur naturally, so were not as important as I hoped. I found a round stone in Locus 21. I created a new locus in an \"L\" shape around a boulder (see drawing from July 10) to understand the difference in the soil (the new \"L\" shaped locus is locus 23. The soil here is more clay like and different from the rest of the Locus 21. For the rest of the day, Roman and Setrak and I trowelled a new locus in the Eastern part of the trench to find the floor. I should also note I have some sort of semi circle feature in locus 18 along the SE wall and continuing to the balk. Possibly part of catherine\'s trench. The feature is made up of 6 stones.
