Today in Kurgan 2, we began to come down in the SE quadrant (which is now Locus 3). Material densities are very low, as expected. We also saw some of the decaying chalk stone that we saw in the SW quadrant. The matrix is this quadrant is the same as Locus 2, a medium brown silty clay loam. As more of the capstone for the interment became visible in the SE quadrant, it became clear that it was also covered with a thick layer of white clay on this side as well. It is not clear yet whether this will be visible in the section. The clay extends out from the rocks on top of the captstone approx. 40 cm, about where the edge of the capstone seems to be. Datum 1 for Kurgan 2 is at 2212.853 masl.
In Kurgan 3, we continued to clean around the stone circle and the stone covering the mound. We also finished removing the turf from the SW quadrant. Datum 1 for Kurgan 3 is at 2208.623 masl.
